When it comes to sweet, tasty goodness, Churros are the best! This unique special treat could only be found at the State Fair, or Carnivals, Farmers Markets, or Amusement Parks. Nowadays you can get Churros at your friendly, neighborhood, Costco! So these cylindrical, bits of flavor may not be as unique as they once were, but no one cannot deny the fact that they are scrum-dilly-umptious!! Especially if they are freshly made right out of the frier!! Fresh and steaming, the sugar almost melts in your mouth with each savory bite!
Ok so that image is now in your head, and then you go and order that “can’t-wait-to-bite-into-luscious-treat: disappointment prevails! It has been sitting under the heat lamp for who knows how long. Yes, it is warm, but not really fresh. It is ok and still tasty, but not extra special! Your memory continues to ping at what once was, as you finish your run-of-the-mill treat.
But wait. Don’t run off yet cuz we have found a fantabulous solution!!!! Make your own Churros, in a box, direct to your door!! You and your family can enjoy every marvelous, sensational bite right out of the frier. Right in your own kitchen, and they are superb! Everything you remembered and more. Where Did Churros Get Started
We are not exactly sure where churros actually came from. A story that has been passed around for generations is about nomadic Spanish shepherds that lived high in the mountains. They created this “churro” which was easy for them to fry over an open fire. This version could be somewhat credible as there does exist a breed of sheep with the name “Navajo-Churro”. These are relatives of the “Churra” sheep from the Iberian Peninsula. Oddly enough their horns resemble the appearance of a CHURRO?!
Other stories exist that the Portuguese when sailing to China came across a dish named “You Tiao” which they brought back on their ships when returning to Portugal. Their neighbors from Spain heard of this special dish and developed their own version. They were supposedly the ones that put it through the star-shaped tip which gives us the edges we see mostly today.
Whatever the origin of the first Churros, we do know the Conquistadors brought them to Latin America. These are the very same Conquistadors, like Juan Ponce De Leon, who was historically recognized for the Fountain of Youth. Many other countries also favor this treat and put their own spin on them, like guava-filled churros from Cuba, dulce de leche-filled churros from Mexico, and cheese-filled delights from Uruguay. Some even have them for breakfast dipped in thick hot chocolate and served with “cafe’ con leche”!
